A home built to to meet the minimum requirements of the EPA Energy Star Program will use up to 30% less energy than a standard built home!
Sound too good to be true? It's not. In fact, with very little extra cost during the construction of a new home, the end result for you,
the homeowner, will be tremendous savings and comfort. Here's a quick list of energy saving features by Dodson Homes:
Dodson Homes' Quality Check List
- SEMI-CUSTOM - Dodson Homes, Inc. is a builder willing to make changes and modifications!
- MANUFACTURED FLOOR JOISTS 16" On-Center (vs. 24" OC) - Provides solid support and a non- bouncy feel to the floors.
- 3/4" SUBFLOOR - (Tongue and groove, glued and nailed).
- LOW-E WINDOWS - Keeps winter heat in and summer heat out!
- 1/2" DRYWALL (vs. 3/8") and 5/8" in Garage
- 4x4 CERAMIC TILE IN BATHS SET IN "MORTAR MUD" (vs. gluing directly to subfloor). Greatly reduces the chances of breakage and tiles becoming loose.
- ENERGY EFFICIENT HEATING/COOLING EQUIPMENT AND ELECTRIC HOT WATER HEATER Gas Furnace burns 92% energy efficient
- Electric Air Conditioner has 12 SEER rating
- SEALED DUCTS - Ducts are sealed at seams with mastic or tape - up to 25% air leakage can occur without this process.
- ENERGY EFFICIENT GAS FIREPLACE - Burns gas at 99.9% efficiency rate and is fan equipped.
- LIVING SPACE ABOVE GRADE WRAPPED IN TYVEK! Another step that reduces air infiltration.
- BLOWN CELLULOSE INSULATION (Exterior Walls) - the blown cellulose insulation has an adhesive quality added to it and will stay where it is sprayed. It packs in tightly and reduces the air infiltration/exfiltration. This is very important - R-factor effectiveness is greatly reduced without air infiltration/exfiltration control.
- BLOWN CELLULOSE INSULATION IN ATTIC - our attics are insulated for an R-38 factor! Typically the majority of heat loss occurs through ceilings in a conventionally insulated house. With our extensive air stop package and extra insulation in the ceiling, the heating loss is greatly reduced!
- AIR STOP PACKAGE - Careful attention to the insulation is only a part of the story. The extensive air stop package includes stopping air flow around outlets, holes for plumbing and electrical lines and pipes, and air stop precautions to prevent the unconditioned air of the attic from infiltrating into the conditioned air of a home.
- FULL FOOTINGS UNDER PORCHES AND STOOPS - (no separation/sinking away from house)
- LOW MAINTENANCE EXTERIORS - Vinyl covered soffits and fascias. Vinyl windows are easy clean tilt-out with no need to paint them!
EXTRA BENEFITS
- IMPROVED COMFORT - wall surfaces and advanced windows feel more comfortable because wall surface temperatures are warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
- IMPROVED NOISE CONTROL - with the combination of blown cellulose insulation and Dow Styrofoam insulation, exterior noise is greatly reduced.
- IMPROVED INDOOR AIR QUALITY - homeowners are assured adequate ventilation is being provided. A continuous air exchange system is built into each home. Also, the ducts are sealed and are much less exposed to potential sources of indoor air pollutants, dust, and radon that can enter through leaks in attics, basements, and garages.
- STRONG POSITION FOR HIGH RESALE VALUE - there is less of a risk of becoming technologically obsolete in the resale market. As more and more homes are constructed to meet the higher standards promoted by the EPA, resale homes without the built-in features of an Energy Star Home will be less competitive. It becomes almost cost prohibitive to retrofit a resale home with the features we build into our homes.....at costs only slightly more than standard built homes.
- REDUCED AIR POLLUTION - also, per the EPA American household energy use contributes to air pollution including 20% of all U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. By building more efficient homes, this pollution is greatly reduced.
